3 Aircraft Concepts That Will Propel the World of Aviation

aircraft maintenanceAviation has gone through incredible changes since its conception. What started as possible flight has turned into regular use commercial and private aviation. What’s more, those advancements that have propelled the aviation world thus far will continue to do so in the future. During last year’s Paris Air Show, there were a few reveals that could indicate what the future of aviation holds, but one thing will always remain true: aircraft maintenance remains the most vital part of aviation.

Electric private jets

Electric is taking the world by storm in just about every application possible, including aviation. Eviation unveiled its light-weight electric aircraft that distributed propulsion with three propellers, one at the tail and two at the wingtips. The plane can hold up to nine passengers and fly up to 600 miles on its lithium-ion batteries. Since it uses propellers, it is probable that it will still need proper aircraft maintenance such as vibration analysis and the occasional dynamic propeller balance.

Personal aviation vehicles

One of the more conceptualized reveals during the airshow was the AirQuadOne, a personal vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. The aircraft would be battery operated and rechargeable at electric power stations, similar to those used in electric car applications today. The design heavily resembles a motorcycle/quad runner hybrid with a seating area and enclosed vertical propellers to the front and back. Takeoff could be performed at practically any location due to the ability to get in the air without having to gain horizontal speed. This concept would change the future of personal transportation considerably, although a full-scale implementation is far from being realistic.

Autonomous flight

Autonomous flight has been in progress for quite some time now, making great leaps in drone applications specifically. However, Airbus has released a prototype for optional piloted flight helicopter and has already begun autonomous flight trials. Commercial sales across the globe were expected to reach $5 billion in 2017, but with new advancements, that number could increase significantly in the coming years. Autonomous flight could be the next realistic step in aviation, and not that far off into the future at all.

Despite what the future holds for the world of aviation, there will always be a need for high quality aircraft maintenance. Even an electric motor and propeller still need the hands of an experienced technician, and that will remain true for years to come.
