Model 1700 Analyzer PlusTransferring data from a Model 1700 analyzer to your PC can sometimes be confusing. The software currently being used with the Model 1700 analyzer, Intelli-Trend, will soon be replaced with AvTrend Silver, a Windows™-based plotting program, but for now, you are most likely using Intelli-Trend, a DOS- based program. (This tip of the month addresses only the Intelli-Trend program. Watch for future tips on the use of AvTrend.)

If you have successfully installed Intelli-Trend on your PC or laptop computer, you must then establish communications with the Model 1700 analyzer in order to transfer data.

If you follow the next few steps, your efforts should be rewarded in short order.

  • Make sure you are using either a NULL MODEM or a LAPLINK cable. One of these cables was supplied with your analyzer when you purchased it. If you cannot locate or accurately identify it, go to your local electronics or computer store and ask for a NULL MODEM or LAPLINK cable. The laplink is usually the best choice as it has both a 25-pin and a 9-pin connector at each end to match the communications port of your computer. You might also require a gender changer (changes a socket to a pin or visa versa) for the analyzer end of the cable according to its configuration. Check the communications port of your analyzer to confirm your needs before making the purchase.
  • Attach the cable to both the analyzer and your computer.
  • Start the Intelli-Trend program and select the "XCOM ACES ANALYZER COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM" from the first screen following the TEC logo screen.
  • Turn the analyzer ON by pressing the ON/OFF key.
  • The computer screen displays the "Communications Status Display" along with the day, date, and current time. Look lower on this same screen to see the "Connect Status" and "Latest Operation" lines. The Connect status should indicate "Transmitter Device Connected" and the Latest Operation should indicate Idle. If the Connect status does not indicate "Transmitter Device Connected" it will display "Nothing Connected" indicating a communications path is not established correctly. This may be due to the communications cable being connected to the wrong comm port or the wrong comm port selected within the Intelli-Trend software. Press the F6 key on your computer keyboard to select another comm port.
  • To confirm a correct connection when the "Transmitter Device Connected" message is displayed, turn the analyzer OFF and observe the message changing to read "Nothing Connected." You may also disconnect the cable from either the analyzer or the computer to accomplish this test. If the message "Transmitter Device Connected" remains when the analyzer is turned off or the cable disconnected, another peripheral device may be connected to the designated comm port of the computer. A serial mouse or personal organizer are examples of such devices. If this is the case and you must use this comm port, you should disable the device and conduct this test again.
  • If you continue to have data transfer problems, check the baud and parity settings in both the analyzer and in the Intelli-Trend program. These setting must match for a successful transfer.
